Chisom’s story

15th August 2017

Student Chisom volunteers as a Warehouse Assistant with FareShare London. Her role involves sorting surplus food, preparing orders of food for charities and helping keep the warehouse clean and tidy. Chisom fits volunteering around studying for her MA in Law and Finance at the University of London.

FareShare London volunteer Chisom holds a tray of surplus food saved from waste

“I wanted to find a place where I could make a difference and FareShare fits with that. Volunteering is about giving back – anytime you give back, it makes you feel so much better. Every time I’m volunteering, no matter how tired I am the night before, I always find the strength to get up and come here. It’s something I just enjoy doing.

The thing I enjoy most about FareShare is the people, the environment and the genuine concern about surplus food. It’s good to be able to do something for someone else who really needs it. FareShare’s work redistributing food to charities is really good. Charities and community groups might not always be able to afford to buy food, but thanks to FareShare they can get access to it.

Volunteering is all about teamwork

Volunteering fits in perfectly with my schedule. I have three days of lectures a week, so giving 4 to 6 hours of my time doesn’t make much of a difference for me. It will definitely help me with further employment opportunities because it is a great way to learn team work. Everyone is making sure that you do everything in the most efficient way. I receive great support from the FareShare team, everybody is very kind and supportive. If I have any questions, it’s easy to go to anyone since everybody is friendly. It makes me feel part of the team!”
