3,000th celebration with Tesco and Charity

FareShare and Tesco have signed the 3,000th charity for a scheme that provides free food to good causes in their local community. The milestone was celebrated this week at Tesco Edinburgh Hermiston with the Riccarton Playgroup.

Tesco works with FareShare FoodCloud to recruit charities and community groups, linking them to stores via an innovative app, and alerting them to surplus food items available for collection at the end of each day.

Riccarton Playgroup, which provide a learning and play environment for up to15 local children, are the 3,000th charity to join the scheme.

Jaqi Welsh, Committee Chair of Riccarton Playgroup, said: “We are delighted to celebrate this achievement with FareShare and Tesco. The fruit, vegetables, bread and cakes the children receive give them the ability to prepare their own snacks, share dishes for celebrations and start to understand about food waste.  We can’t thank you enough.”

Lee-Anne Wilkinson, Community Food Connection Regional Coach, at Tesco Edinburgh Hermiston said:

“The scheme is a great way to support people in our community who need it the most. Together with FareShare, we believe that good food shouldn’t go to waste. That’s why we’re looking for even more charities and community groups to come forward to register for the programme.”

Scheme live in every large store

Following a successful rollout to all 803 Large Tesco stores that are now live across the UK with charities collecting, more than 1.5 million meals to date have been donated to people in need via the FareShare FoodCloud scheme.

FareShare FoodCloud is the latest step in Tesco’s work with FareShare on the provision of surplus food. The partnership spans over three years and includes activities which make food available from the Tesco supply chain, distribution centres and dotcom centres.

Tesco stores nationwide are still recruiting for charities and community groups for the scheme, including Edinburgh Hermiston. Visit www.fareshare.org.uk/fareshare-foodcloud to register your interest.
