“I was over the moon to be offered the job – it still feels like a dream. From the first day I started here as a volunteer I loved it. I love the place, the people and the work we are doing.”
We caught up with our new London Warehouse Shift Co-ordinator Robert about his journey from FareShare volunteer to FareShare employee, bringing an infectious enthusiasm with him.
“I promised her I would do something worthwhile with my life”
Prior to joining FareShare, Robert spent the past few years looking after his young twin boys and caring for his mother who was bravely battling cancer. It was his mum who encouraged him to pursue a career that helped others and made a difference. “Before my mum passed away I promised her I would do something worthwhile with my life. She used to do charity work herself so it inspired me to do the same” Robert explains. “I’ve previously been in a similar position to some of the people we are helping now, so I wanted to give something back”.
From volunteer to Warehouse Shift Co-ordinator
In the two months Robert was volunteering at FareShare – working in the London Regional Centre sorting food in the warehouse, logging deliveries into the database and assigning food to charity members – he knew very quickly that FareShare was the right fit for him. “Knowing at the end of the day that I’m helping people in my local community – I’m a born and bred Londoner so this is important to me!” he says.
During his short time at FareShare, Robert has already completed a number of training qualifications to best equip him in his role – such as a van driving license, food hygiene level 2 and a manual handling certificate. After applying and successfully being offered the job he couldn’t be happier. “FareShare has had a massive impact on my life. My wife and kids are over the moon and really proud of me” he says. “There are not many jobs where you get up and want to go to work – if I could do 8 days a week I would!”
“I absolutely would recommend volunteering at FareShare to anyone! It’s a way to motivate yourself and have confidence in yourself when you have been out of work for a while. I know how hard it is when you have been long-term unemployed, so this is a good way to get yourself back into work. It’s also very satisfying knowing that you are doing something good for people.”
