FareShare London seeks Food Heroes this Winter

1 December 2016

This December FareShare London is calling for an army of ‘food heroes’ to volunteer at its Deptford warehouse this Winter.

FareShare London redistributes in-date food from retailers and manufacturers to over 200 charities and community groups across the capital. The food is delivered to homeless hostels, lunch clubs for older people, domestic violence refuges and children’s breakfast clubs where it is turned into nutritious meals for Londoners who are hungry.

The warehouse is open Monday to Saturday and the charity is seeking dozens of volunteers, including drivers, driver’s mates, warehouse and office support people who can spare a few hours a week to ensure that surplus food gets to the people who need it most.

Mercia, who has been volunteering with FareShare London since 2012, said, “Without volunteers FareShare simply wouldn’t work as we are the middle man between the supplier and people. Somebody getting fed is a good day for me as I get a sense of fulfilment from it. This is an everyday issue, people cannot get back up on their feet and into work if they are hungry.”

Rachel Ledwith, FareShare London, added: “Christmas time is an incredibly busy time of year for food deliveries into the warehouse, and we desperately need more volunteers to get this good food out to our charities and community groups. We are calling on the good people of London who can spare a few hours a week to get in touch and help us fight hunger during the season of goodwill through to the New Year and beyond.  In just a few hours our volunteers help us to distribute tonnes of food to hundreds of people in need ensuring they are able to enjoy the pleasure of a hot cooked meal this Christmas.”

Interested individuals can sign up for morning, afternoon or evening shifts and will be part of a team that helps to sort food and prepare the warehouse for the busy week ahead. FareShare London cover reasonable travel costs, within zones 1 – 4.

Volunteers can register their interest by filing in the form on the right or contact FareShare London on 0207 064 8913 or volunteerlondon@fareshare.org.uk
