KPC Youth is a charitable organisation in Bridgend working with children, young people and their families. The charity receives regular food deliveries from FareShare Wales for its community café where they serve a range of healthy snacks and meals for those accessing their services.
They offer a wide range of activities on evenings, weekends and during the school holidays, including an open access youth provision for children aged 8+, as well as other schemes including Messy Play for mums and toddlers, an after school club for ages 5-7 and an employability scheme for adults seeking work.
KPC Youth is just one of many schemes across the country helping to ensure that, when the safety net of free school meals is taken away over the holidays, children can still enjoy a nutritious, healthy lunch and snack, as well as plenty of exciting activities.
Alison Mawby, Project Development Manager at KPC Youth, says: “We work with such a wide range of people across Bridgend and we find that having a cafe within our centre provides a central hub for the community. It enables us to offer quality, affordable snacks and hot food for those accessing our centre, particularly for children and young people who attend our open access youth provision in the evenings and school holidays.
“The food from FareShare really helps us to keep costs at a minimum and ensures that we are able to offer good quality food and snacks to young people. The children love our café and all the food we serve! Schemes like ours are so important in helping to reduce holiday hunger and making sure children and young people can access affordable food – and even try some foods they wouldn’t normally have at home.”
“FareShare also enables us to support those who are unemployed attending our centre as we’re able to offer them food donations. We often receive positive feedback from families accessing our services who are glad that our café is here, and able to offer their children affordable meals. It’s particularly useful for families with several children who may sometimes struggle financially.”
