Hasan began volunteering at FareShare Sussex in February 2019. Previously a firefighter in Syria, Hasan joined FareShare to practice his English language skills and meet new people.
“Everyone is very lovely and the staff and managers are very helpful and nice,” said Hasan.
Since joining, Hasan has completed forklift training and hopes to soon improve his English to a level where he can support the local fire service. Hasan has been described by his colleagues as coming along leaps and bounds since joining FareShare Sussex, inspiring the whole team by working tirelessly with his lovely, friendly nature.
Hasan’s dedication and enthusiasm were recognised in FareShare’s annual volunteering awards, which took place virtually this year. Hasan won the joint award for Warehouse Assistant of the Year.
When asked what impact volunteering with FareShare has on his life, Hasan answered: “It helps my learning, speaking English, learning new skills, learning about the area and visiting projects in different towns. When I walk with my wife in town I see my friends who I volunteer with and everyone says ‘Hello Hasan’. I feel very happy with this.”
We’re so grateful to Hasan and all the volunteers across the FareShare network. Without them we could not do the work that we do.
