Each year FareShare takes part in the Tesco Christmas Food Collection where volunteers across the country collect generous donations of long-life food from shoppers. December 2017 was one of our biggest and best collections yet, and thanks to your support we received an estimated three million meals for people in need.

“We couldn’t provide a balanced meal without the Food Collection as we rely on the general public to donate long-life food.”

Store cupboard essentials, such as tins or teabags or rice, are combined with fresh surplus food to provide well-rounded, wholesome meals for vulnerable people. The donations are now making their way around the country to kids’ breakfast clubs, homeless hostels, women’s shelters and community centres.

Organisations like Millman Street Community Centre, where Andrew is a manager.

“Most of our older people live alone without the support of family or a carer to encourage them to eat... The money we save [on food] by using FareShare, we use for our activities programme, events, trips and outings that we set up for our older people.”

Ivy, 83, attends the lunch club at Millman Street; “The people down here are so lovely, and the staff are brilliant. So are all the volunteers. We all talk about what we’ve been up to. It’s nice to have something to do, it’s like therapy really.”
