This summer, FareShare is supporting 250 projects fighting holiday hunger across the UK through the Fit and Fed project.

“Holiday hunger has a far reaching impact. We know that children who go hungry over the holidays find it harder to learn when they come back school in September. We believe that the school holidays should be filled with fun and excitement. Sadly, for many children from low income families, they’re a time of hunger and social isolation – and that’s why we’re supporting the Fit and Fed project.”

Lindsay Boswell, FareShare CEO

In partnership with charity StreetGames, which provides free sports sessions to children from disadvantaged backgrounds, FareShare will be providing enough food to create 250,000 free nutritious lunches and snacks for children who might otherwise go hungry.

FareShare is the UK’s largest food redistribution charity, taking good-quality, in-date surplus food from the food and drink industry and redistributing it to charities and community groups.

Holiday hunger is a real and pressing issue. Currently 1.7 million children in the UK are eligible for free school meals during term time. Once the holidays start, this safety net is removed, and families’ budgets are stretched to breaking point. The result is that many children will go without access to proper meals.

In addition, children from poorer families are also much less likely to be involved in sport. Taking part in sporting activities doesn’t just improve a child’s fitness, it boosts their confidence and helps them develop their social skills as well.

The partnership would not have been possible without support from food companies such as Allied Bakeries, 2Sisters, Bidfood, Gerber, Cofresh, Coca-Cola and IPL. The food provided has been specially selected to meet the children’s nutritional needs, and includes healthy cereal bars, bottled water, fruit juices and fresh fruit.
