Student Volunteering Week 2016: Be a FareShare Food Hero!
22nd February 2016
22nd February 2016
Today is the start of Student Volunteering Week (SVW), taking place from 22-28 February and FareShare is excited to celebrate this campaign.
Organised by Student Hubs and the National Union of Students (NUS), SVW will see students and staff from over 100 colleges and universities celebrating not-for-profit work throughout the UK. SVW has grown from a small campaign to a truly national one, with more than 10,000 students expected to take part in over 500 events across England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Student Volunteering Week will highlight how student social action helps to tackle key social issues, such as educational disadvantage and elderly isolation. According to research by Ipsos MORI, 42% of 10-20 year olds took part in meaningful social action in 2015 and 70% of young people surveyed said they are likely to participate in social action in the future. With pressures on local services throughout the UK, volunteering has a role to play in bringing groups together to meet community need.
We are always on the lookout for people to join our friendly and busy teams across the UK, in FareShare’s 20 Regional Centres. We have lots of opportunities for volunteers to get involved, from community and PR work and office administration, to warehouse stock control, preparing food orders for redistribution to charities and driving our vans, helping to provide food for thousands of meals. If you are looking to give back to the community, develop your work skills or just want to meet new people who are passionate about food waste and food poverty, we have the perfect opportunity for you.
At FareShare, our volunteers are our lifeblood. They carry out the vital activities across our 20 Regional Centres and make FareShare happen. Without them we would not be able to get good food to those who need it most and they literally keep our vans on the road! They are true food heroes.
