Winning an award is always an honour but it feels particularly special when it’s our volunteers who are recognised. Volunteers are the lifeblood of FareShare, so we were delighted earlier this week when our London team triumphed in the Outstanding Contribution to Improving the Lives of Londoners category at the Team London Awards.

FareShare London volunteers Fintan Culwin, Eleanor Watkins and Mirko Boettcher collect a Team London award from Boris Johnson.

Fintan, Eleanor and Mirko proudly collected the certificate from Mayor of London Boris Johnson at an event at City Hall, on behalf of their fellow FareShare London’s volunteers. Fintan and Mirko can more usually be found driving a FareShare van delivering food to charities and community groups across the capital, while Eleanor is back at our London HQ  liaising with our member charities . That’s just some of the work our volunteers do to make sure good food gets out to 233 charities and community groups, helping to feed over 19,805 vulnerable people a week.

Fintan told us what keeps him coming back to FareShare  “When I get home in the evening I can look back on the day and think that there’s people in London who are having a meal tonight that they might not have had otherwise. With a lot of jobs you can come home and think to yourself what difference have I actually made today? Volunteering at FareShare I know I’ve done something to help. ”

The Team London event is held to recognise the contribution of ordinary people who support voluntary and community organisations in London. Michelle Ford, FareShare Volunteer Coordinator, says it’s a great initiative “FareShare couldn’t feed people in need without our army of volunteers, many of whom come back to us year after year. Getting recognition from the Mayor really inspires our great volunteers like Fintan, Eleanor and Mirko and the certificate will have pride of place on our celebration wall in the kitchen.
