As lockdown restrictions are eased, the prospect of a brighter future is once again on the horizon. However, for thousands of struggling families this is just the start of a long road to recovery – for families like Elena’s the impact of the covid crisis may be felt for years to come.
The pandemic has pushed families who were already struggling into financial hardship. For many, food support is the only way to put meals on the table. For Elena, FareShare food has become a lifeline.
Elena and her family have been receiving food from FareShare since early 2020.
They look forward to the food parcels each week. The weekly parcels are also helping Elena to teach her 8 year old daughter about food and food waste. Elena stresses the care and attention shown in the food parcels “it is really thought through, it is not just chucking food into boxes, it is taking care of it”. She adds “any savings, especially at the moment are very helpful”.
The demand for food has skyrocketed. In the past year, FareShare distributed food equivalent of 128.5 million meals to vulnerable children, families and individuals – the equivalent of four meals every second.
The need for assistance remains high – 2.3 million children have experienced food insecurity in the last year. FareShare is doing all it can to get as much good-to-eat surplus food as it can to vulnerable people.
