Celebrating World Environment Day

Today is World Environment Day and to mark this special occasion we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the environmental impact of our work during this past year.
Unbelievably, a third of all the food produced in the world goes to waste. In the UK alone we throw away over 10 million tonnes of food every year. When you consider the resources involved in growing, preparing and transporting that food, often halfway around the world, that figure is even more shocking. On top of that, any wasted food that ends up in the landfill produces methane – a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. According to The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, 8% of all human-caused greenhouse gas is created by food waste. And, if it were a country, food waste would be the third-highest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world.
But, by working closely with the UK food industry (from retailers, growers, packers and producers to suppliers and hauliers) to divert their in-date surplus food to good causes, FareShare has, over the last year, saved 58 million kg of CO2. To put it into perspective, that’s the equivalent of 6,945 homes’ electricity use for one year. So here is to another successful year of helping both people and the environment!
