At FareShare, we work with almost 10,000 amazing UK charities and community groups offering support for vulnerable people alongside hearty, nutritious meals made with good quality surplus food.
As part of International Women’s Day, we spoke to two women working to provide children at risk of hunger with a healthy breakfast. Farhana Sultana and Karen Lewis work at Hollydale Primary School in London, which receives a regular delivery from FareShare for their Breakfast and After School Clubs.
“Some parents can’t afford to feed their children three meals a day so we supply the breakfast club with juices, yogurt and jams,” says job title Karen. “The parents are able to go to work and the children can come in and have a healthy breakfast.”
Assistant Head Teacher Farhana explains: “We can also teach the children about the importance of nutritious food for their wellbeing, through cooking healthy meals as part of their After School Clubs.”
A good breakfast helps children to concentrate and do well in the classroom. “We see a real difference because they’ve had something decent to eat,” says Karen.
The school packages up any extra food and distributes it to local families. Karen says: “Sometimes we give food to families if they can’t afford to buy their own.
“FareShare saves us so much money – keeping the cost down for the after school club means the children can have a healthy warm snack in the evening too.”
There are thousands of incredible women like Farhana and Karen using FareShare’s food to make a difference in their communities. Help us get more food to charities and community groups (including breakfast clubs like this one) and donate here.

On International Women’s Day we celebrate the achievements of key female staff helping to run the FareShare networks. Women are key figures in 10 out of 21 of the FareShare Regional Centres across the UK, managing complicated logistical operations that guarantee the success of our mission.
