Last laps in sight for fundraising legend ‘Roller John’ Wilcock’s epic skating challenge

25 November 2021

John Wilcock, an 89-year Warwickshire man who shot to fame roller-skating around his garden to raise funds for charity is set to complete his challenge on Wednesday 1 December 2021.

Inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore and Marcus Rashford MBE, ‘Roller John’ Wilcock initially aimed to raise £500 in aid of FareShare by skating 180 laps of the courtyard outside his flat before his 90th birthday. John’s story soon hit the headlines – and his fundraising total now stands at just over £39,000. John’s new goal is to raise £50,000, which would enable FareShare to deliver enough food to help create 200,000 meals for families facing hunger this winter.

This September John was awarded joint Fundraiser of the Year at FareShare’s Volunteer Awards. FareShare’s Commercial Director Alyson Walsh, said: “John’s grit and determination are truly inspirational. We couldn’t be more grateful for his incredible efforts, and the money he’s raised will get food onto the plates of families across the country. Thank you, John.”

John said: “Without my friends (mostly unknown to me at the start), the challenge would have remained unremarkable. Instead, it has been such an outstanding success, I am pleased for myself, I am pleased for FareShare, I am pleased for my supporters and I am pleased that together we have been able to help ease the pressure on some families and children facing hard times.”
