Tesco has donated the equivalent of 4.5 million meals to FareShare to support thousands of vulnerable people across the country affected by coronavirus.
At the beginning of the lockdown, Tesco pledged to support FareShare and Trussell Trust, with an additional £15 million worth of food to help feed more vulnerable people during the coronavirus pandemic.
The retailer is a longstanding partner of FareShare and the additional donations came on top of the £3 million worth of food that is delivered every month through its Community Food Connection (CFC) scheme and distribution centre.
Tesco also donated £500,000 to FareShare to support continuing operations during this time.
Lindsay Boswell, Chief Executive of FareShare, said: “We are incredibly thankful to Tesco for their generous and continued support during what has been such a tough time for so many people.
“Applications from charities and community organisations requesting food from us has tripled since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, so we have had to make significant changes to our operations in order to keep up with demand.
“The additional 4.5 million meals worth of food from Tesco has helped to ensure that FareShare can continue to support thousands of frontline charities working with those people who are most vulnerable right now.”
