We continue a full national operation to get food to vulnerable people during the Covid-19 crisis.

Thanet Earth provide one million meals to people facing food insecurity

21 October 2021

This month Thanet Earth has reached the significant milestone of distributing one million meals through a partnership with FareShare.

“Thanet Earth is proud to partner with FareShare. The scheme has allowed us to donate produce which has contributed towards around one million meals, and supported over 2,300 charities across Britain. It is incredible that our donations have been able to help so many families to put food on their tables, especially during the challenging times we have recently faced.”

Thanet Earth provides FareShare with surplus fresh produce, including tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers, which are sorted and then delivered to our network of charities and community groups supporting those most at risk of hunger.

Having regular access to fresh nutritious food is so important to the 10,500 groups that FareShare works with. It enables their community chefs to offer up healthy meals alongside life changing support services.

Emma White, Warehouse Manager at FareShare Kent, said:

"Our charities are grateful to Thanet Earth for all the tomatoes and peppers they have sent us over the last few years. They have been really welcomed and used by homeless shelters, community projects and schools across Kent to provide meals to those who otherwise might not have sufficient access to good nutritious food.”

Thanet Earth has been a FareShare partner since 2013 and has stepped up its support throughout the pandemic becoming one of FareShare's top 20 suppliers in the last year, delivering to FareShare warehouses across the UK.

Thanet Earth are able to divert increasing volumes of fresh produce to FareShare by utilising the FareShare Surplus with Purpose Fund to help cover the costs of harvesting, packing and palletising their surplus vegetables.

The fund helps growers like Thanet Earth to cover the extra costs of redistributing good-to-eat food that would otherwise go to waste and now accounts for more than a third (37%) of the food FareShare redistributes.

Lindsay Boswell, Chief Executive at FareShare,  said:

"Thank you Thanet Earth for providing one million meals to some of the most vulnerable people in our communities. Having access to fresh, quality vegetables is so important to the charities that we supply, particularly as families are set to face a tough winter ahead.

"We welcome Thanet Earth’s ongoing work to divert surplus food to people instead of it being wasted, and to help FareShare to deliver our mission to fight hunger and tackle waste.”
