In response to the Autumn Statement

Lindsay Boswell, CEO of FareShare, the UK’s largest food redistribution charity, said:

“Nearly 14 million people in the UK are experiencing food insecurity – that’s one in five people in the UK. Millions in this country face serious economic hardship.

Even with some of the positive measures announced in today’s budget such as uprating benefits in line with inflation, as rising costs deplete people’s bank balances, more people will turn to the charity sector for help.

The 9,500 charities who we supply with food are making it crystal clear that they need more food to meet this skyrocketing demand. That’s why FareShare has been calling for £25 million in government support for farmers and growers, to help us deliver 100 million meals of good to eat surplus food to those worst affected by the cost of living crisis.

We handed a letter in to Number 10 last week signed by 57 MPs who agree with us, yet this support was absent in today’s budget. The chancellor has talked at length about difficult decisions – but today missed a very easy one.”
