Kerrang Radio has launched a three-week campaign to raise awareness of food waste and food poverty, in partnership with FareShare and The Trussell Trust.

The surplus food that FareShare diverts from waste is a lifeline for thousands of charities and community groups across the UK – without it, one in five charities say they would have to close – but because we work behind the scenes, we’re one of the charity sector’s best-kept secrets. That’s why we’re thrilled to be part of the #FoodFighters campaign. It’s a great opportunity for us to share what we do with Kerrang’s audience and ask them to support us in any way they can.

Fighting food waste & hunger

Last year, FareShare redistributed more than 9,000 tonnes of food that would otherwise have gone to waste, to nearly 2,500 charities and community groups across the UK including homeless shelters, children’s breakfast clubs, addiction recovery centres and domestic violence refuges.

It was enough food for frontline charities to serve up 18.3 million meals for vulnerable people, but it’s about more than meals – those charities also provide life-changing support that helps people get back on their feet.

There’s the potential to do much more. At least 270,000 tonnes of surplus from the food and drink industry could be redistributed to feed people every year, enough for about 650 million meals.

Become a #FoodFighter today!

Lend a hand at one of our Regional Centres – we’re always on the lookout for people who can help us sort food donations, as well as drivers who can take to the road to help us deliver food to local charities. Find out about volunteering opportunities at your nearest Regional Centre.

Be a Hero Against Hunger this Christmas – sign up as a Neighbourhood Food Collection volunteer and in just a few hours, you could collect enough tins, cans and packets for charities to serve up 500 meals. If you want to spread the goodness even further, why not encourage your friends, family, colleagues, neighbours or band-mates to sign up too?

Do something TINcredible – if you’re going to the Feeder gig at the Camden Roundhouse on 12 October, take along one or two store cupboard essentials like a packet of pasta, tin of tomatoes or jar of coffee – they must be sealed and in date. We’ll redistribute them to charities alongside fresh produce we’ve saved from waste.

Give a fiver to provide 20 meals donate £5 through JustGiving and FareShare will be able to redistribute enough food for charities to serve up 20 meals, for about the price of a pint. Donations of any size are very welcome!

Help us to spread the word about FareShare – we’d love it if you would follow us on Facebook or Twitter, or sign up to our newsletter to keep up to date with our latest news.
