Alistair has been working at the charity Baltic Street Adventure Playground (BSAP) for over two years and helps run a community playground in Dalmarnock, Glasgow – one of the most deprived areas in the UK. The playground is a lifeline for families living in the local area, as it not only gives the children a safe place to spend their free time but also provides them with hot, nutritious meals and healthy snacks – invaluable for families living on tight budgets.
FareShare supports charities like BSAP by redistributing food given by companies across the UK. One such company is Kiddylicious – in May they donated over 50,000 healthy snacks, which meant that the kids at BSAP were in for a real treat.
“The playground is open to children between the ages of five and 12 and is a place they can call their own, where they are able to freely express themselves. For many of the children this is their only chance to play outside in the fresh air, enjoying games and outdoor activities with other children. Through group activities such as gardening and tree-climbing, our aim is to build their self-confidence as well as developing their social skills,” explains Alistair.
Because the playground is located in a very deprived area of Scotland where parents often struggle to put food on the table, food is an important part of what BSAP does.
“We see many parents who do not have enough money to feed their children once school is out, and it is up to us to fill that meal gap. During the school holidays, we usually accommodate up to 2,500 children, providing hot meals as well as fruit and healthy snacks. We’ve been working with FareShare for two years now, and because of their support last year we saved more than £20,000 – an incredible amount for an organisation our size! – which would have otherwise had to be spent on food, and that we can now put to good use on facilities for the children. Without FareShare, we would find it much harder to deliver the much-needed support in our area and we are thankful to food companies like Kiddylicious who support charities like us by donating food to FareShare.”
“It is also wonderful to see the smiles on children’s faces when we can treat them to something special that they wouldn’t normally have at home. I remember the day the Kiddylicious van arrived with the delivery; the kids got so excited they helped unload the van and plunged straight into exploring the tasty treats. It felt like Christmas had come early to the playground!”
