Howden have announced a new two-year national partnership with The Felix Project and FareShare, bringing together a shared commitment to tackling food waste and food insecurity across the UK.
“At a time when demand for our food is growing and people are struggling with the cost of living, we're thrilled to be entering into this new partnership with Howden. Working together, and with more than 8,000 charities, we can make a meaningful difference for people in need and build stronger communities across the UK. Many Howden colleagues already support our work by volunteering in our warehouses, and it's fantastic to be building on those important relationships following our recent merger.”
Charlotte Hill, CEO of The Felix Project & FareShare
The partnership will see Howden employees volunteering at The Felix Project and FareShare locations nationwide, making a valuable contribution to the redistribution of surplus food to communities who need it most. Alongside hands on volunteering, Howden colleagues will raise vital funds through a range of fundraising activities, charity events, challenges and employee-led initiatives, to help strengthen the charities’ reach and impact.
The UK’s leading food redistribution charity, The Felix Project and FareShare merged earlier this year. This partnership is the first to be announced since the merger and marks an important step in Howden’s long-term commitment to positively impacting local communities and the environment.
Approximately 14.3 million people in the UK live in poverty, including 4.3 million children. While people go hungry, the UK food industry throws away the equivalent of 10 billion meals every year. The Felix Project and FareShare exist to bridge this gap by working with the food industry to rescue surplus food and ensuring it reaches frontline charities and community groups. Through this partnership, Howden employees will play an active role in helping turn surplus food into meals and support for people in need across the country.
Nick Stace, Chief Global Impact Officer, Howden, said: “At Howden, we back people who are boldly rethinking how to solve society’s toughest challenges. With around 14% of households experiencing food insecurity, and 10.7 million tonnes of food going to waste each year, the scale of food waste and hunger in the UK demands ambition and innovation. The Felix Project and FareShare bring just that by reengineering the food system to tackle the root causes of both.
By committing to raise an ambitious target of £1m and mobilise thousands of volunteer hours over the next two years, we hope to not only help them to redistribute the equivalent of over 5 million more meals, but to enable their continued innovation, accelerating their ambition to end hunger and food waste across the UK.”
The partnership was chosen through an employee-led process, with colleagues in the UK across Howden invited to nominate charities close to their hearts. Following a shortlisting and charity pitches, more than 1,200 employees took part in a company-wide vote, selecting The Felix Project and FareShare as the winning partners.
