Our Work With Asda

FareShare & ASDA

ASDA have been a key partner for FareShare since 2013, supplying a vast range of products from fruit and vegetables to dried pasta and fresh meat. Throughout this 10-year partnership, ASDA’s support has been indispensable in helping FareShare divert surplus food to those who need it across the UK.

Over the past 10 years, ASDA have diverted surplus that occurs in their distribution centres across the UK, for instance where stock has been mislabelled or overproduced. Always looking for ways to deepen the relationship, ASDA have recently taken the initiative to review and upscale their depot-level surplus redistribution programme. Where volume was previously consolidated in select distribution centres, FareShare now collect from every ASDA chilled distribution centre across the UK, helping to unlock new avenues of surplus.

As well as diverting surplus from their distribution centres, ASDA quickly jumped on board to offer valuable surplus food from their stores after the launch of FareShare Go in 2016. More than 500 stores across the UK are signed up to divert their end-of-day surplus to FareShare. This innovative programme uses ASDA’s own technology to create relationships between ASDA stores and local charities who can take surplus food and make it into tasty and nutritious meals for their communities.

Not content with simply offering food to FareShare, the team at ASDA have also offered valuable time in the form of volunteering, as well as £13 million of corporate donations through ASDA’s Fight Hunger, Create Change programme, that helped FareShare to scale up its operations and infrastructure in the early days of the pandemic when need was at an all-time high.

The partnership continues to flourish: when FareShare launched the Coronation Food Project in November 2023, ASDA was one of the first to support this key initiative. The project aims to capture surplus and donated resources of any kind (packaging, labour and capacity and well as food) to produce more nutritious food to help people in need. ASDA’s involvement has once again demonstrated their commitment to reducing waste while getting nutritious meals to those who need it most across the UK.

“We would like to say a huge thank you and congratulations to all our friends at Asda. This has been one of the biggest partnerships FareShare has ever had. Over the last 10 years, Asda has donated an amazing £13 million, given us the equivalent of 30 million meals and supported 7000 charities. At every opportunity, Asda helps to identify, save and redistribute surplus food, helping FareShare ensure it goes to people who need it most, rather than to waste. Each and every person at Asda has given us amazing support and these incredible milestones would not have been reached without their dedication and commitment.”
