A group of young volunteers taking part in the National Citizen Service Powered by the Jewish Lads’ and Girls’ Brigade (JLGB) programme visited FareShare’s depot in London recently, to help sort food that would be redistributed to charities and community groups across the capital.
The ‘Furious Fudge’ team helped FareShare London to sort 25 pallets of food that had been diverted from waste, enough for frontline charities to provide nearly 30,000 meals for people in need across London. They also helped to pick food orders for the charity’s delivery vans, which would be delivered to 1,700 people in need.
The NCS Powered by JLGB programme brings teens from different faiths and backgrounds together with the aim of making a positive contribution to their local community. As well as helping in the FareShare depot, they took to the streets to fundraise, volunteered at a soup kitchen and distributed refillable water bottles.
Rachel Ledwith, FareShare London Development Manager said: “We call our volunteers ‘Food Heroes’ because they play a really important role in helping FareShare get the good food that we divert from waste, to good causes that support vulnerable people. We were so impressed by the team from the NCS Powered by JLGB programme and truly grateful for their hard work, which will help us to feed more people in need – something they should be really proud of.”
Furious Fudge team member, Sam Landsman, said: “I’ve really enjoyed the tasks, it was a useful activity. FareShare’s a great organisation. It’s amazing to see what the volunteers do and that the food redistributed is really good food. Helping out at FareShare was definitely worth it and I will look up the Regional Centre in Manchester when I go there.”
