A happier Easter Holiday with FareShare

Most children look forward to the Easter Holidays but for those that experiencing food poverty, it can be a difficult time.
With the closure of schools for half term, comes the closing of Breakfast Clubs and After School Clubs, leaving the 1 in 4 children living in food poverty without access to their daily source of nutritious and healthy food. FareShare works with hundreds of children centres and community groups across the UK that aim to help fill that void.
One of those is The Cabin Crew Out of School Club in Ipswich, which runs a breakfast, after school and holiday club for 4-11 year olds.
Receiving surplus food through FareShare Go, they provide healthy snacks and meals for children. “The food from FareShare is very important to us,” says Heather, the Club Manager. “It not only provides the children with healthy and nutritional meals, but also encourages them to learn some cooking skills and work well together.”
The Avenue Project at St Andrew’s Church in Bo’Ness also provides nutritious meals through The Avenue Youth Programme, which works with young people in the local community.
“The variety of foods we receive through FareShare FoodCloud, and the fact that the children can help to make meals, has transformed the lives of some of our youngsters,” said Lilias, Youth Worker at the youth programme. “We also offer them work experience, help them with their CVs and job applications, with mock interviews with Tesco Staff. All this would not happen if it wasn’t for the relationships that we’ve developed through Tesco FareShare FoodCloud.”

“Every time the salmon goes off site and we put it in a hole in the ground it costs us money. We wanted a solution that was cost effective, taking food out of landfill, sustaining what we make, and making money as a business.”
