Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland we operate as a project of Homeless Connect, a charity that aims to prevent and reduce homelessness, acts as the voice of the homelessness sector, and provides direct assistance to those in need through services like FareShare.

FareShare NI is directly tackling food poverty in Northern Ireland by collecting surplus food from industry and redistributing it to charities, community groups and schools that are providing meals to vulnerable and disadvantaged groups, including low income families, senior citizens, people with disabilities, victims of domestic violence, at risk young people and homeless people. The Northern Ireland warehouse has been operating successfully for over fourteen years and last year provided 172 charitable projects located across the province with 727 tonnes of food, which is equivalent to 1.7million meals.

As well as providing food producers with a safe, environmentally friendly and ethical solution to the disposal of waste, FareShare Northern Ireland has provided 72 volunteers with valuable work experience and training in areas such as Food Hygiene, Fork Lift driving and Health and Safety.

Voices from FareShare Northern Ireland…

“The food we receive from FareShare has been great for our school community. It has allowed us to host a breakfast club in various venues in our school offering quality food, smoothies and drinks to our young people and ensuring they have had plenty to eat before their day at school begins. The extra food has allowed us to feed more young people than previously and has also seen an increase in the popularity of our breakfast club. We are very grateful for the support.”

“The children have been receiving a daily healthy breakfast snack. Parents are made aware what is on the breakfast snack menu each day and are reminded it is a healthy snack – we encourage parents to try to make healthier choices for meals and treats and encourage children to taste and eat new foods. Children have also helped to create a healthy eating display to help reinforce healthy eating and what foods are and aren’t healthy.”
